Mali has a 3-6-3-3 formal education structure. There are three years of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of four and is referred to as éducation préscolaire. Primary school, which is known as premier cycle fondamental, has an official entry age of seven and a duration of six grades. Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.
Lower secondary, which is known as deuxième cycle fondamental, consists of grades 7-9 and culminates in the diplôme d`études du fondamental (DEF); upper secondary, which is known as enseignement secondaire général, consists of grades 10-12 and culminates in the Baccalauréat. In addition, Mali has various upper secondary vocational education tracks that last between two and four years (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2013 school year).
